World’s largest pencil.

Doug Martin from the famous Pencil Pages sent us this great photo of the new World’s Largest Pencil, updated from the previous champion. Both are by Faber-Castell, though. Now that is German engineering! Check out the page at Doug’s site.

“This is a photograph of the World’s Largest Pencil, a Castell 9000 located at Faber-Castell’s facility in Malaysia near Kuala Lumpur. This pencil is nearly 65 feet tall and is housed in a glass enclosure. Completed in 2002, it is made from Malaysian lumber, fitted from small pieces tongue-and-groove fashion. Once the first half was built, a German-made polymer lead running the full length was inserted and the remainder was built, then sanded and finished. The project required over 7000 man-hours over a two year period to complete. The pencil is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest.”

And be sure to surf around the Pencil Pages, since Doug tells us that he’s updated much of the site, including the links section and some other goodies.

A couple of points:

The positioning is interesting; the logo would show up to you if you were going into/coming out of the building, whereas I might have considered putting it facing out (where the bar code is) simply so it would be what people saw driving up.

The bar code in the photo looks white, whereas I’ve got some 9000s where it’s gold. The sales person at Utrecht’s had problems scanning, which she attributed to the gold coloring.

At least they don’t have those noxious stickers by the point . . . the Moon pencils do, and it’s most unpleasant.

The last pack of Staedtler Lumographs I bought had those annoying stickers. The goo won’t come off, and I think these are the newer design, since the fonts are larger.

Cool, I like that! Now we just need a matching fountain pen to make the set. ;-)

this is great achievement for faber castell.they have made it i dream to make one like that
bless me

Well it WAS the largest pencil, it is no more. Ashrita Furman is the new record holder with a whooping 76′ 2.75″ long pencil currently located in NY. Well faber, it was a good run while it lasted.
