Ashley sends us some cool stuff regarding the ability to write in color, without resorting to ink:
“Sorry to inundate your inbox with my pencil finds [ed. never! keep them coming!], but the latest ones, CRAYOLA TWISTABLES Colored Pencils are truly exciting. It would not be going too far to call them a supermarket serendipity, as I stumbled upon them at the grocery store. Yet another impulse purchase, but not one I regret!!
I’d never heard of them before. They write really well, like very thin crayons. They are a shameful waste of plastic, since the ‘lead’ twists and retracts within a transparent plastic casing. One would probably not want to write term papers or reams of notes with them. I plan to use them for editing, highlighting, and journaling, in addition to all those times I want to write in pencil, but not in graphite gray!!
A pack of twelve cost 3 dollars.”
Thanks, Ashley!

Go Crayola! (My profit sharing account thanks you! — I work for the large conglomerate that owns Crayola)
What’s a good wood-cased pencil for yellow or orange highlighting? I’ve tried some of the Prismacolor yellows and oranges, but they are a bit too thin and require a little too much English, compared with the effortless glide of an ink-based hiliter. The Twistable sounds like it could be it, but ouch, the plastic…
Oh, I love colored pencils…I just might have to try these!
(PS: I’ve been reading via Bloglines, so this is the first I’ve seen the new WordPress site. Nice!)
STAEDTLER Starliter Dry Highlighter Pencil
See http://www.office1000.com/discount/pencils-highlighters.html
They were almost $5.00.
I ordered the Forest Choice colored pencils, just for my own writing/doodling. I like the way they look, and I love the regular graphite ones, plus they’re economical.
I sound like a commercial. :)

The Starlighters are not $5 each. You do have to buy a dozen, but the price each works out to about $1.35 each. A student will have no trouble using up a dozen, but they could also sell the extras to classmates.
Look for bible highlighters. Here’s a company in Australia that has 25 orange Staedtler highlighter pencils for AU$2.95 each (plus shipping — about 3 weeks for delivery to the US): http://orders.koorong.com.au/search/details.jhtml?code=4007817110102
Here’s a four-pencil kit for $12.95: http://www.allbibles.com/items.asp?Cc=BSA&Bc=
Here’s an eight color bible highlighter pencil (it’s not woodcased, which is why I didn’t list it the first time) for $24: http://www.booksofthebible.com/p3640.html
