    For first drafts legal pads are tough to beat. Plenty of wide-open space over which to wander. What I really want is a legal pad with a sturdy back that you can use in your lap while seated on a comfortable chair.

    Rhodia and Clairefontaine are the best. I was surprised they are as good for graphite as they are for ink.

    dobro, if you want something a little more economical than the Rhodia, however, Topps Dockets Gold sells for $20/dozen on Amazon. They have sturdy backs.

    I would have to disagree with your comment about the orange of the cover not complimenting the yellow paper, I really rather like it and find it to be a warm pad in appearance :)
